New Delhi: Dr. Sameer V. Kamat, head of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), in a special interview to India TV, informed India’s defense technology and unprecedented works being done towards self -sufficiency. He discussed in detail the arms systems, radar technology, missile systems and future plans used in the recent clashes with Pakistan. Let us know that many weapons developed by DRDO during Operation Sindoor have performed brilliantly and have got their iron all over the world.
What did DRDO chief say on Akash missile system?
Dr. Kamat reported that the sky missile system developed by DRDO, medium-range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM), and an anti-drone D4 system was integrated in the recent struggle. The development of the Akash System began in 2004-05 and was later upgraded as Mrsam in collaboration with Israel. The D4 system played an important role in killing the drone. Using these three systems integrated into India’s defense capacity has increased unprecedented increase. Dr. Kamat proudly said that these systems performed ‘great’ and were able to thwart any enemy attacks.
Where does India stand in radar technology?
DRDO has also made remarkable progress in radar technology. Dr. Kamat said that India is now capable of designing surveillance, tracking and multi-functional radar, which fulfills the needs of the three armies (Thal, Navy and Air Force). Earlier every radar used to work freely, but now they have been integrated. This integration has increased the ability to get real-time information, which has further strengthened India’s defense system.
Which arrows in DRDO’s quiver?
Let us know that there are many arrows in the quiver of DRDO which are to be revealed. DRDO is planning to include several indigenous defense systems in the army over the next two-three years. These include:
- Veri Short Range Air Defense System (Vshorads)
- Man-portable anti-tank guided missile (mpatgm)
- Holocaust missile
- Rudram missile
- Advanced Light Torpedo
- Multi-influence land mine
With the involvement of these systems, Indian forces will be stronger towards self -sufficiency.
Work on many missiles including BrahMos
Dr. Kamat said that work is going on on the extended range of BrahMos missile, which will become part of the army in the next 2-3 years. BrahMos NG (Next Generation) will be integrated into various aircraft. Currently it is used only in Sukhoi aircraft, but it will be more powerful in the future. The accuracy of BrahMos and the ability to destroy enemy goals makes it an extraordinary missile. DRDO is also working fast on air-to-air missiles. The weapon missile has already joined the army, and now work is going on on Astra-2 and Astra-3. In addition, the Rudram missile is also emerging as an important system.
India will create a defense system like ‘Iron Dome’!
Dr. Kamat said that India is working on a layered defense system like Iron Dome. Currently India has systems like Akash Missile, Qrsam, and S-400. In addition, work is going on on the Kusha missile, counterpart of S-500. Many units of these systems will be required to protect the entire country. Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) was approved last year. Its first prototype will be ready by 2029, after which flight tests will begin. By 2034, the project will be completed and from 2035 AMCA will start to be part of the Indian Air Force. The project can be completed in association with private sector or HAL.
How much progress on MK1A, Artillery and Light Tank?
DRDO Chief said that there was some delay in the delivery of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) MK1A due to delay in the GE engine supply chain. The Indian Air Force has ordered 83 LCA MK1A, which will be delivered in the next 3 years. The development of LCA MK2 has also started and it will start getting to the Air Force by 2033. DRDO is also working on artillery systems such as Atags and Pinak. Light tank user trials will start from June-July 2025, and its production will start from 2027.
‘Current government paid attention to self -reliance’
Dr. Kamat said that DRDO is working on basic technology and integration for the UAV, which is becoming game Changes in the fight. Apart from this, emphasis is also being laid on an anti-drone system to deal with self-drones. He said that the current government has paid special attention to self -reliance. The first DRDO was limited to research and development only, but now India is moving towards becoming a global leader in defense technology due to a strong ecosystem. Systems like Pinak, BrahMos, and Akash are proof of this.
