By -elections are being held in five assembly seats in four states of the country. Voting for this has also started at seven in the morning on Thursday (June 19). Voting is going on for Nilambur in Kerala, Ludhiana West in Punjab, Kaliganj in West Bengal and Visvadar in Gujarat, Kadi seats. The results of the by -election will be released on 23 June. These elections will not change the power of any state, but are important for the leadership of the people of the region and for the preparations for the upcoming elections.

All -round collision in Nilambur

The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) supported independent MLA P.V. The separation between Anwar and the ruling Marxist Communist Party (CPI -M) is being held in Nilambur in Northern Malappuram district. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s government has only a few months to complete the second consecutive term, so the by -election in Nilambur has become a fight for both the ruling CPI (M) -led LDF and opposition party Congress -led UDF (United Democratic Front). The Congress has fielded former president of the Nilambur municipality Aryadan Shaukat, who is the son of senior leader of the late party Aryadan Mohammed, while the CPI (M) has expressed confidence in its state secretariat member M. Swaraj. Both traditional fronts have expressed confidence in their victory, while the BJP -led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) decided to field his luck by fielding lawyer Mohan George by profession, which was earlier associated with various groups of Kerala Congress.

Triangular contest in Kaliganj

The Kaliganj by-election seems to be taking the form of a triangular contest between the Trinamool Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress-Vam alliance. Identification based politics in the election discussion, concerns arising after the Murshidabad riots and the increased nationalist atmosphere after ‘Operation Sindoor’ have emerged as major issues. This is the first election in West Bengal after ‘Operation Sindoor’. This by -election became necessary due to the death of Trinamool Congress MLA Naseeruddin Ahmed earlier this year. The Trinamool Congress has nominated 38 -year -old Alifa Ahmed, daughter of Naseeruddin Ahmed. Alifa Ahmed is a BTech graduate and corporate professional. The BJP has nominated local panchayat member and former divisional president Ashish Ghosh, while the Congress has nominated Kaabil Uddin Sheikh with the support of Marxist Communist Party (CPI -M) -led Left Front. The constituency has a total of 2,52,670 registered voters, including 1,30,363 males and 1,22,303 females. To ensure smooth and accessible polling, the number of polling stations has been reduced to 309.

14 candidates in Ludhiana West

Ludhiana West Assembly seat AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi was vacant due to death in January. A total of 14 candidates are in the fray for this seat, whose fate will be decided by 1.74 lakh voters. Officials said that there will be a total of 194 polling stations for the by -election. The ruling ‘AAP’ in the state has fielded Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora for the by -election. Arora (61) is a Ludhiana industrialist and is also known for his social welfare works. He runs ‘Krishna Pran Breast Cancer Charitable Trust’. Arora is a member of Rajya Sabha since 2022. The opposition party Congress has bet on former minister and Congress Punjab unit executive president Bharat Bhushan Ashu (51). Ashu has been an MLA from this seat twice in 2012 and 2017. In the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, he was defeated by Gogi by a margin of 7,512 votes. Ashu has been the Minister of Food and Civil Supplies in the previous Congress government. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded senior party leader Jeevan Gupta. He is a member of the core committee of Punjab BJP. He had previously been the general secretary of the state unit of the party. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has made Singh Ghumman its candidate by philanthropy for the by -election. Ghumman is a lawyer by profession and the former president of Ludhiana Bar Association.

AAP-Congress BJP in Gujarat

There is a triangular contest between the BJP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party in the Visavadar and Kadi assembly seats of Gujarat. High-profile candidates are in the fray for former AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani’s Junagadh’s Visavadar seat, which was vacant since joining BJP in December 2023. BJP has fielded Kirit Patel, Congress Nitin Ranparia and AAP have fielded their former Gujarat president Gopal Italia. In Kadi in Mehsana district, the seat reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates has been vacant since the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki in February. The ruling party has fielded Rajendra Chavda. The Congress has fielded Ramesh Chavda, who is the former MLA who won the seat in 2012, while AAP has bet on Jagdish Chavda. In every constituency, 294 polling stations will be voted through electronic voting machines (EVMs). The Gujarat government has also announced a public holiday in both constituencies on polling day to encourage voters’ participation.
