Baleshwar: Recently, a heartbreaking decreased at Fakir Mohan College in Baleshwar district of Odisha. Troubled by sexual harassment, a B.Ed student set herself on fire. He died during treatment. There is an atmosphere of anger and resentment in the entire state due to this incident.
The college administration did not take concrete steps on the complaint of the student
A 20 -year -old B.Ed student committed self -immolation by putting kerosene on herself on 12 July. It is being told that the girl was upset with the college professor Sameer Sahu. He had complained about sexual harassment against him several times, but the college administration did not take any concrete steps. The student was burnt 95% and was first referred to Baleshwar Hospital and then AIIMS Bhubaneswar. But he died during treatment.
Member of internal grievance committee made shocking disclosure
The matter was investigated by the Internal Complaint Committee of the college. ICC member Minati Sethi said that the student had complained about mental and sexual harassment against Sahu. He told that Sahu used to make students stand out of class on small matters. Once, the student was also parked out of class when she came late, which was very hurt.
Sahu allegedly said, “You are not a child, you can understand what I want
Minati Sethi said that on June 30, Sahu had also stopped the student from taking the semester examination. The next day, the student complained of sexual harassment. It was told in the complaint that Sahu had asked the student to ask for “favor”. When the student asked what kind of favor, Sahu allegedly said, “You are not a child, I can understand what I want.” However, Sethi also believed that it was difficult to prove this, because in such cases it is very difficult to gather evidence.
ICC recommended the removal of Professor Subhash Sahu
In this case, the ICC had also recommended the removal of Professor Sameer Sahu. But the college administration did not take any action on time. The effect of this was that the victim student started feeling helpless and finally took a step like self -immolation. After this incident, heavy resentment is being seen throughout Odisha. Many student organizations and opposition parties are seeking answers from the government regarding this issue. The Congress has also announced a shutdown across the state on Thursday.
Now questions arise that when the student complained, why was the action delayed? Why the accused was not removed despite the recommendation of the ICC? Could the college administration save the girl’s life? This tragic incident of Fakir Mohan College not only killed a promising student, but also showed how terrible it can be if timely action is not taken in serious cases like sexual harassment. Now the question is whether the college and administration will take responsibility or will this matter go in cold storage like other cases?
