‘Any document can be made forged on earth’, SC said on SIR of Election Commission

The Supreme Court on Monday has questioned the Election Commission’s reluctance in accepting Aadhaar and Voter ID Card (EPIC) as a valid document in the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar. The court said that any document could be forged.

Justice Suryakant said, “Any document on earth can be forged.” He pressured the Election Commission to clarify why Aadhaar and EPIC are not being fully accepted, while Aadhaar is already being sought in the registration form.

During the hearing held today, the Election Commission argued that Aadhaar is not a proof of citizenship. The court expressed concern about fake ration cards. Also said that due to large scale fraud, it has become difficult to trust them. However, the Commission admitted that Aadhaar could be presented as evidence of identity. Its number has already been sought in the registration form.

Where to stop fake documents, court raised questions

The Supreme Court, while questioning this, said that if no documents are decisive in its list of Election Commission, then this logic can also apply to the basis and EPIC. The bench asked, ‘If the other ten other documents you accepted yesterday were also found to be fake, then where is the system of stopping it? Why are people being kept out on a large scale instead of inducting people on a large scale? ‘ The court also requested that if someone is kept out of the list, the deadline for the process should be set.
