Sivasagar: The gas leakage continued for the fourth day in a well of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in Sivasagar district of Assam. Officials said that 70 families have been rushed to the relief camp. He said that a team led by ONGC Director (Technology and Field Services) Vikram Saxena took over the operation control of the well number RDS 147 on Saturday, where the leak started.

“The process of destroying the well is going on and we have gathered all the necessary equipment for this. The crisis management team (CMT) is working on a war footing to control the leak,” an official said. He said that the well has not been caught fire yet and no casualties have been reported in this incident. The gas leak took place on June 12 in the well of Rudrasagar oil area of ONGC in Kuan number RDS 147A in Rudrasagar oil area in Bhatiapar. SK Petro Services, a private firm, was operating the well on behalf of the public sector ‘Maharatna’ company.
How many people affected by gas leakage?
A senior district administration official said that about 1,500 people have been affected by the incident. He said, “They are smelling gas and they are unable to burn their stove or anything. We are providing them cooked food and are constantly monitoring the situation.” The district administration said on social media forum Facebook that 70 families from the region have been transferred to the relief camp set up in the nearby Bangaon and all necessary arrangements are being made to ensure their convenience and prosperity.
The administration said, “Currently, doctors of the Health Department and Animal Husbandry Department are present on the spot. They are investigating the health status of people and their pets.” Earlier, an ONGC official had said that it was an old crude oil well in which there was no production. (Language)
