New Delhi: There has been a political stir after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation from the post of Vice President. Now all the eyes are on the face of the new Vice President. So far, 16 elections have been held for the post of Vice President in the country and only four times the candidates could win unopposed, while two elections were seen to be a multicolored contest.

S Radhakrishnan won twice unopposed

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the Vice President twice from 1952 to 1962 and he won unopposed in both the elections. In the 1952 election, nomination was filed by Janab Sheikh Khadir Hussain of Andhra Pradesh but his nomination papers were rejected, leaving Radhakrishnan the only candidate.

Mohammad Hidayatullah became unopposed Vice President in 1979

In 1979, famous jurist and former Chief Justice of India, Mohammad Hidayatullah, was elected unopposed Vice President. Hidayatullah has a unique pride of working as Chief Justice, Vice President and Acting President. As the Chief Justice, Hidayatullah worked as a acting President in 1969, when VV Giri resigned as the acting President and Vice President to contest the presidential election. After the death of the then President Zakir Hussain on May 3, 1969, Giri took over as the acting President.

Shankar Dayal Sharma won unopposed in 1987

In 1987, the then Governor of Maharashtra, Shankar Dayal Sharma won the Vice President unopposed. 27 people had filed nomination papers for the ninth Vice Presidential election but the Election Officer only found Sharma’s application valid.

After that, in the next Vice Presidential election in 1992, KR Narayanan got 700 votes out of 701 votes. His rival Kaka Joginder Singh ‘Dharti Phanta’ got only one vote. A total of 711 votes were cast in the election, out of which 10 were found illegal.

Triangular match only once

The triangular contest was seen in the Vice Presidential election only in 2007 when UPA candidate M. Hamid Ansari was contesting NDA candidate Najma Heptullah and third front candidate Rashid Masood. Out of a total of 790 voters in that election, 762 voted, out of which 10 were found illegal. Out of the valid 752 votes, Ansari got 455 votes, Heptulla got 222 and Masood got 75 votes.

1962 Vice Presidential Election

In 1962, Zakir Hussain won the Vice President against NC Samant Singh by 554 votes. Out of the 745 -member electorate, 596 members cast their votes, out of which 14 were found illegal.

1967 Vice Presidential Election

In 1967, VV Giri defeated Professor Habib and won the Vice President.

1969 Vice Presidential Election

In 1969, GS Pathak defeated five candidates to become Vice Presidents. That year, elections were held for Giri’s resignation as Vice President to contest the presidential election that year.

1974 Vice Presidential Election

In 1974, BD Jatty won the Vice President by defeating NE Horo. Jatty got 521 votes while Horo got 141 votes.

1984 Vice Presidential Election

In the year 1984, R. Venkataraman won the Vice Presidential election. He got 508 votes out of 715 valid votes. He defeated Bapu Chandrasen Kamble.

1987 Vice Presidential Election

In 1987, Venkataraman quit the post to contest the presidential election and Shankar Dayal Sharma was elected Vice President in the election held that year.

1997 Vice Presidential Election

In 1997, Krishnakant defeated Surjeet Singh in the Vice Presidential election. Krishnakant got 441 votes while Singh got 273 votes.

2002 Vice Presidential Elections

BJP leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat defeated Congress candidate Sushil Kumar Shinde in the 2002 Vice Presidential election. Shekhawat got 454 votes out of 759 valid votes while Shinde got 305 votes.

2007 Vice Presidential Elections

In 2007, M Hamid Ansari won the Vice Presidential election and in 2012 the then UPA government fielded him again. In 2012, Ansari defeated BJP candidate Jaswant Singh by 490 votes.

2017 Vice President Election

In 2017, BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu defeated Gopalakrishna Gandhi of Congress -led UPA. Naidu got 516 votes out of 760 valid votes while Gopalakrishna Gandhi got 244 votes.

2022 Vice Presidential Election

In the year 2022, NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar defeated Congress -led UPA candidate Margaret Alva. Dhankhar got 528 votes while Alva got 182 votes.
