Paraguay President Santiago Pena, PM Modi meets on visit to India

At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Paraguay President Santiago Penna Palasios is on a three -day state visit to India, aimed at extensively reviewing bilateral relations and expanding overall cooperation. On Monday, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Earlier in the day, President Palasios went to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and paid floral tributes at the memorial. His visit will end on 4 June.

PM Modi hosted lunch

Prime Minister Modi hosted lunch in honor of the guest leader. Apart from this, President Draupadi Murmu will also host the banquet in meeting President Pena and in his honor. According to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (Mea), Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will also meet President Pena. The Ministry of External Affairs said, “President Penna’s upcoming state travel will provide an opportunity to leaders to discuss the regional and international issues of mutual interest along with extensive reviews of bilateral relations.”

Programs will also be held in Mumbai

During his visit, President Penna will also meet the state’s political leadership, business and industry representatives, startups, innovators and tech leaders in Mumbai.

Why is this meeting important?

This meeting is important in many ways, as Paraguay is an important trading partner of India in the Latin American region. Many Indian companies have attendance in Paraguay in automobiles and pharmaceutical fields and some Paraguay companies, mainly in India through joint venture institutions.

When were diplomatic relations established?

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and Paraguay established diplomatic relations on 13 September 1961, developing warm and friendly relations between the two countries. Since then both countries have developed cooperation in various fields including trade, agriculture, health, pharmaceuticals and information technology. The Ministry of External Affairs also stated that the two countries share similar views on various international issues including United Nations reforms, climate change, renewable energy and terrorism. This journey is an important opportunity to further strengthen cooperation and partnership between the two countries.
