New Delhi: The Election Commission of India said on Wednesday that it has started the process of holding the Vice Presidential elections and has started the formation of an electoral college with MPs of both the houses of Parliament.

The Election Commission will first create a voter list. After this, the process will be that the voter list will be freed. After this, new names will not be added. This will be followed by the appointment of the Returning Officer.

Election date can be declared after a week

After this, a committee will be formed which will see what problems had come in the last elections so that this time those problems do not have to be faced. After this the election schedule will be announced. It will take about one week to complete this process. After this, the date of election can be declared.

According to the rules, the next Vice President should be elected as soon as possible. The Election Commission said in its press note on July 23 that the Ministry of Home Affairs has duly informed the resignation of Dhankar and the election schedule will be announced as soon as possible. The Election Commission said that the major initial steps initiated include compilation of electors with elected and nominated members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, selection of returning officer and assistant returning officer, and preparing and distributing detailed background materials of all previous Vice Presidential elections.

The country will get a new Vice President by August

The country is expected to get a new Vice President by the last week of August, according to the requirements and guidelines generated after the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar. According to Article 68 (2) of the Constitution, there is no fixed time limit to hold the Vice President in the event of resignation. According to the provision, elections should be held as soon as possible.

Notification may be released within three days

According to Election Commission sources, preparations started soon after the Ministry of Home Affairs gave the formal information about the resignation of the Commission. A formal notification indicating the election requirement is likely to be released within the next two to three days. According to the President and Vice President Elections Act, 1952, after the notification is issued, the Election Commission has to complete the entire process including nomination, investigation, nomination, voting and counting within a maximum of 32 days. Accordingly, the election and swearing in the next Vice President of India is expected to be held by the end of August 2025. Nomination papers should be submitted within 14 days of notification.
